Williams (Fire) & Livingston (Ice) capture 2009 Broach by one shot

Van Williams and Jay Livingston - representing The Dominion Club - took home the 2009 Nelson Broach Memorial Championship at The Federal Club after turning in a two round total of 5 under par 139 to defeat defending champions Tim & Brock Kelley by one shot - who finished solo 2nd at 140 (69-71).  Close behind at 141 were four teams.  Places 3-5 were determined by a match of cards using USGA standards.  Robert Nussey, Jr & Adam Frank finished 3rd, Steve Isaacs & Matt Brantingham were 4th, and Alan Strange & Bert Wilson took the 5th spot.  First round leaders Marco Poccia and Greg Marbold slipped to a 2nd round 73 for a 141 total as well but finished 6th on the card match.  For full field results click here.

Pictured above (left to right) are Federal Club head professional Spence Andrews, Jay Livingston, Van Williams, and RGA president Bert Wilson.  Once again the venue of The Federal Club was spectacular.  The course was in excellent condition with the greens rolling just under 12 on the stimpmeter.  Thanks to Ray Tate and the other owners for hosting the Broach Memorial for the2nd consecutive year.  Kudos to Spence and the rest of the Federal Club team - including course superintendent Trevor Hedgepeth - for a job very well done.

During Saturday's final round Williams birdied 3 holes on the front (5,6, and 9) during the best ball portion of the round offset by only 1 team bogey on #3 from short range to make the turn 2 under.  They started off the back side in the modified alternate shot format with a birdie on the par 5 #10.  They didn't fare so well on the next par 5 on the back (#13) as they carded a tough double bogey after the team's second shot went far right of the green.  Livingston came back on the long downhill par 3 14th hole by knocking his tee ball to 5 feet - and Williams drained the birdie putt to get back to even on the back.  After routine pars on 15 and 16 Livingston drained clutch 5 foot par putts on both 17 and 18 to preserve the victory and turn in a final round score of 70.

Playing in the next to last group Tim and Brock Kelley came to the18th hole just needing a par to match Williams / Livingston and take the tournament into a playoff.  The hole on 18 was cut hard against the left side of the green - which brought the bunker left of the green into play.  Perhaps firing at the pin for a birdie and the outright win the Kelley's 2nd shot ended up in that left trap - short sided with a tough up and down facing them.  They were unable to convert the par putt after blasting out and dropped to 2nd.  Strange / Wilson -playing in the same group with the Kelley's - needed a birdie 3 on 18 to get into the playoff but their 2nd shot ended up in the water that guards the right front of the green which ended their championship hopes.

The best round of the tournament was turned in by 1st Flight winners Scott Campbell and Rick Lareau.  After turning in a disappointing 79 on day one they came back with a blazing 7 under par 65 on day 2 to win the flight going away at 144.  2nd place in the flight went to the team of Eric Bliley and Paul Hamerman at 146.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this event and all the 2009 RGA events.  It was a fantastic year and we appreciate all the host clubs and all the players who participated in the events.  We look forward to a fantastic 2010 season.

Keefer Captures Mid Am Championship in Playoff

Ben Keefer, a 30 year old from Hermitage C.C., shot a final round six under 66 for a two day total of 138 and defeated Tim Kelley in a two hole sudden death playoff. Keefer, the 1996 RGA Junior Champion, sank an eight foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat Kelley who fired a final round 67. Kelley was attempting to add the 2009 Mid Amateur Championship to his 2009 City Amateur and Senior Amateur Championships. First round leader, Robert Nussey, carded a final round 73 to miss the playoff by one shot.

Keefer made six birdies against no bogeys to complete his six under round. The highlight of his round was a thirty foot, sidehill birdie putt on the eight hole. Kelley answered with five birdies and no bogeys to complete his five under 67. Nussey (matched in a final group battle with Glenn Mullian and unaware that Keefer and Kelley had finished at six under) three putted the eighteenth hole to miss the playoff by one shot.

The Mill Quarter golf course was in excellent condition and played at 6700 yards for the two day tournament. The RGA would like to express its appreciation and thanks to Dave Daniels and the entire staff at Mill Quarter for all their efforts.  In addition to the course being in top condition all aspects of the tournament were top notch.  Great job guys!

The final event of the RGA season - the Nelson Broach Championship at The Federal Club - is coming up in mid September.  We look forward to a great field and thank everyone for their participation so far in 2009.

Chalkley captures RGA Junior Title

Bryce Chalkley, a 16 year old golfer from Petersburg, CC. is the 2009 RGA Junior Champion. Bryce shot a final round five under par 67 on the 6500 yard Crossings Golf Course for a two day total of 6 under par 138 to beat out Tanner Foutz by three shots who shot a final round 70 for a two day total of 141.

On a beautiful sunny day, Bryce started off tied with Tanner, but quickly birdied the first two holes. Tanner responded by making three birdies of his own. Tanner turned in 3 under 33 and held a one shot lead over Bryce heading for the back side.

The back nine saw the lead exchange hands several times. The fifteenth turned out to be the pivotal hole when Bryce birdied and Tanner bogied for a two shot swing and a three shot lead. Bryce held on to his lead and finished with a back nine three under par 33 for a closing round of 67 and a three shot victory.

Congratulations to Bryce Chalkley, the 2009 RGA Junior Champion!  He is pictured here with Carl Filipowicz (left) - Head PGA Professional for The Crossings GC - and Bert Wilson, RGA President.

Many thanks for Carl Filipowicz and the staff at The Crossings for all their outstanding efforts - the course was in excellent shape and everything ran very smoothly.

Thanks to all those who particpated and the parents who made it possible for the players to compete. Everyone should be proud of their efforts regardless of score.  Click Here for full field results and age group champions.

Tim Kelley crowned 2009 RGA City Amateur Champion

Tim Kelley prevailed 2&1 over his son Brock Kelley in an RGA version of "Father Knows Best." Tim adds this championship to his already impressive 2009 credentials which include wins at the RGA Senior Championship and RGA 2-Man Championship (Open Division - pairing with Brock) and a 2nd place finish at the RGA 2-Man Championship (Senior Division - pairing with Ace Conway).

Tim is presented with his 2009 RGA Championship trophy by RGA president Bert Wilson (right) and Richmond Country Club's PGA Head Professional Matthew Schulze.

In the first flight Larry Loving prevailed 1 up over Tony Good in a hard fought, well played match.  The 2nd Flight was captured by Matt Paciocco and Paul Peterson took home the honors for the 3rd Flight.

A huge "THANK YOU" to Matt Schulze and the entire staff at Richmond CC.  The course conditions were outstanding, the hospitality fantastic, and the tournament ran smoothly from start to finish.  Tremendous Job!!!

Check back here soon for more details on the championship matches and some photos of the action.  Thanks to everyone who participated!  Next up is the Junior Championship at the Crossings and the Mid-Am at Mill Quarter.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming events.

Quarter-Finals matches set for City Amateur

All the flights are pared down to eight players going into Saturday's doubleheaders at Richmond Country Club.  In order to get through to the finals on Sunday morning players must beat 2 opponents tomorrow under tough condtitions - temperatures predicted in the mid to high 90's.  The course is in fantastic shape and the greens are rolling 12-13 on the stimpmeter.

In the Championship flight Jeff Bostic backed up his medalist effort in the qualifying round with two dominant wire-to-wire performances.  According to his afternoon opponent ,Garrett Whitmore, "he (Bostic) never missed a shot."  Bostic wasn't the only representative from the senior RGA ranks to make it into the quarters - he is joined by Glen Mullian - who defeated #3 seed Jay Livingston in the morning and Paras Pandya in the afternoon - and Tim Kelley - who was stretched to 21 holes in the afternoon but prevailed over Michael Shrader - as over 50 year old players claimed 3 of the 8 quarterfinal spots.

Steve Serrao rolled to 2 victories - taking down #4 seed Tom Vlahakis in the morning and UR golfer Sam Beach in the afternoon - and he never had to go past the 15 hole.  Brock Kelley also claimed a place in the quarters in cruising 5&3 by Jake Williams in the afternoon.

Timmy Osterbind and John Phillips represented the younger set well - both moving into the quarters with two fairly tough matches.  Both players were taken to the 18th hole in their afternoon matches and had to par the difficult uphill dogleg par 4 to secure their spots with identical 1 up victories.

The final spot in the quarters was taken by the last man standing in the 10 for 1 playoff for the last spot in the championship flight.  Corbin Smih defeated defending champ Clark Taylor in the morning 2&1 and dispatched Austin Gray in the afternoon in similar fashion.  He said it "felt like the U.S. Open" because he just kept grinding for pars - and by the looks of his scores he was doing it well.

The matches kick off at 8 a.m. Saturday and the semi-finals begin at 1 p.m.  Good luck to all!

Bostic Claims Medalist Honors in City Am Qualifying

Congrats to Jeff Bostic for shooting the only under par round of the day (69) and taking home medalist honors.  Jay Livingston and Tom Vlahakis both fired even par 71's to claim the 3 and 4 seeds respectively.

The day ended with some drama - a 10 person playoff for the last spot in the Championship flight and the right to face defending champ Clark Taylor first thing Friday morning.  Two fivesomes went off #10 but only 2 survived - Larry Loving and Corbin Smith - with birdie 3's.  Each player turned in pars on 11, 12, and 18 although Loving had birdie looks on all 3 and barely missed from inside 10 feet on 18 - while Smith had to get up and down 3 straight times from just off each green.  The duo continued back to #10 where Smith's short approach hit the stick and left him a couple feet for birdie which he drained to claim the last spot.  Kudos to both players on a hard fought 5 hole playoff.

Match play kicks off at 8 a.m. tomorrow.  The chamionship flight will play 2 matches (2nd round starts at 1:30) and the other 3 flights will play 1 match.  Thanks to all for playing and good luck!

Bostic - Mullian go back to back and win 2009 Senior Two Man Championship

Jeff Bostic and Glenn Mullian cruised to an 8 under 63 and succesfully defended their title in winning the 2009 Senior Two Man Championship at Hanover Country Club.  The duo carded 8 birdies in symmetrical fashion - 4 on the front, 4 on the back - with no open holes on the way to a 2 shot victory over Tim Kelley and Ace Conway.  Tim Rash and Lee Coble carded a 67 and took home 3rd place honors.  The teams of John Cuomo - Tom Hackett and Walter Anderson - Lou Moelchert both finished at 3 under 68 but Cuomo - Hackett took 4th on a match of cards.

In the Second Flight Fred Cox and Gary Soltes eked out a victory over the duo of Lee Krumbein and John Mann.  Both teams finished with 72 but Cox - Soltes won out on a match of cards (last 9 holes both had 36, last 6 holes Cox - Soltes were 3 strokes better).  Rounding out the honors in the flight was the duo of Dick Corrada and Dennis Whitcomb at 74.

Full field scores can be found here.

Many thanks to the great staff at Hanover CC for another well run event.

Kelley holds off Mullian for RGA Senior victory

Tim Kelley followed up his first round with an identical 1 under par 71 to post a 2 day total of 142 and defeat Glenn Mullian (143) by a single shot.  Mother Nature came through with a beautiful afternoon - 75 degrees, sunny and breezy - and 44 players worked their way around a fantastic venue in Petersburg CC.  Rusty Breeden hung on for 3rd at 146 and Van Williams came back with a 1 under 71 to snatch 4th at 149.

Breeden was right in the mix - only 1 back of Kelley coming to 15 tee - but pulled his drive left and the ball was never found in the trees.  He ended up taking a double after re-teeing and that knocked him out of contention.  Kelley held a 2 shot lead standing on 16 tee over Mullian.  Both players played the smart shot on the long par 3 playing away from the bunker right but Mullian left his first putt 5 feet short and slid the par putt by the left edge.  Kelley made his par to hold a three shot lead going to 17.

Kelley bogeyed 17 however after pushing his tee ball in the right trees and had to punch to the front of the green and couldn't get up and down.  Mullian barely missed a birdie putt from about 10 feet above the hole.

Mullian put the pressure on Kelley by draining a 25 foot birdie on 18 - but Kelley 2 putted from the back fringe to a back center cup to secure the victory.  This was Tim's second RGA senior victory adding to his 2007 win at Salisbury.

Steve Isaacs shot a solid 74-76 (150) to take home the bragging rights for the 60 and over set.  Full field scores can be found by here.

A big thank you goes out to Kenny Clark and the entire crew at Petersburg.  Everything was top notch.  The tournament ran smoothly, the condition of the course was fantastic - especially the green complexes - and the food and beverages afterwards were right on time.  If you haven't played Petersburg in a while do yourself a favor and make arrangements to play a round.  Thanks to everyone who participated and we look forward to seeing you at the next event!

Kelley - Kelley capture RGA 2 Man in 19 holes

Tim and Brock Kelley birdied the first play-off hole to defeat the duo of Larry Loving - Scott Campbell and win the RGA 2 Man at Hanover Country Club.  Both teams turned in an excellent 4 under par 67 in sunny but tough conditions due to a continual 20 mph wind and fast but very true greens.   Full field scores are available by following this link.
